The HIPAA act should protect our medical privacy but do hospital officials go to far for fear of being sued? In this article are a few cases that make you question the HIPAA and the people who are supposed to follow the rules, in this case they seem to go overboard.
Although it started as a good idea, HIPAA has gotten out of control. A nursing student was reprimanded for violating the privacy act after she was seen reviewing her very own medical record. A health department representative refused to disclose to a newspaper the number of influenza cases in the county, incorrectly citing that it would be a HIPAA violation.
I work in EMS. It’s laughable all this HIPPA crap. I’ve had to ask people barely on the bleeding edge of insanity to sign my paperwork that I’ve provided them a bilingual HIPPA document. Some of our most egregious system abusers who call for an ambulance 2-5 times weekly have a pocket stuffed with copies of the pink documents that various crews have given them.
When a friend is concerned about the welfare of the patient, and that patient has just been shot, I am supposed to ask permission of the guy with two bullet wounds in his chest if I can tell the friend what’s going on. Stupid. Retarded. HIPPA is like some starfish. You chop off the legs and each leg grows into another starfish.
As it is know to everyone that every coin has two sides and same applies with many policies along with the HIPAA policy. No doubt that the HIPAA policy has been brought in for protection and safety of individual’s EMRs but if the emergency situation like Katrina arises the same policy finds a difficult thing to deal with but nevertheless HIPAA policy is must and need to maintain the safety of EMRs of each individual. I work for a hospital. In 2005 my husband was taken to the emergency room at the same hospital and died of heart failure. My supervisor than printed his medical records and shared it with the co-workers. I have been looking for a attorney to help me see if I have a case against the hospital and co-workers?
I work for a hospital in the maintenance department, you can’t believe the stupidity of of the people who created this HIPPA mess. We are having to move walls, desks, enclosures, windows and more just for the fear that someone may see the name of a patient on a computer screen from 20 feet away. Having to shred every document as soon as your done with it, not being able to place it in a box to shred later because someone might see it. Something has to be done. I want everyone to start to write to congress and get a stop to this madness. All the money wasted on hippa could pay off the national debt.
